Bullet Trains To Link Beijing with Chengdu and Chongqing Begin Service on New Year’s Day

EIRNS—High-speed trains connecting Beijing with Chengdu and Chongqing in southwest China will begin service on New Year’s Day. This will cut the usual 30-hour travel time to 15 hours for Chengdu and 12.5 hours to Chongqing. Tickets for peak travel times during the Spring Festival this year are already sold out in spite of the higher fares for the high-speed route.

China’s two top high-speed train-makers, China CNR Corporation and CSR Corporation, have also signed their merger agreement, in the works for some time, which is aimed at increasing productivity, reducing redundancies, and optimizing resource allocation. The merger will create a $26 billion company able to compete with Germany’s Siemens and Canada’s Bombardier for global rail deals.
