EIRNS—CBS’ 60 Minutes will air an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, Sept. 27, the night before Putin addresses the United Nations General Assembly and before he meets with Barack Obama. Beginning last night, CBS began releasing short video clips of the interview, conducted by Charlie Rose, and the excerpts already provide a glimpse into his understanding of the strategic situation, the importance of the Russian move into Syria, and the disaster of Obama’s policies.

On Syria, when Rose mentions that some say Russia has moved into Syria to ``rescue’’ Assad, Putin replies, ``Well, you’re right,’’ and that there is no other way to stop another disaster like that in Libya except by strengthening Syria’s legitimate government.

CBS released the following transcript:

Vladimir Putin (through translator): ``Well, you’re right. And it’s my deep belief that any actions to the contrary in order to destroy the legitimate government will create a situation which you can witness now in the other countries of the region or in other regions, for instance in Libya, where all the state institutions are disintegrated. We see a similar situation in Iraq.

``And there is no other solution to the Syrian crisis than strengthening the effective government structures and rendering them help in fighting terrorism. But at the same time, urging them to engage in positive dialogue with the rational opposition and conduct reform.’’

When Rose says that ``some of the coalition partners want to see President Assad go first...,’’ Putin responds, ``I’d like to recommend to them the following: They should send this message to the Syrian people. It’s only the Syrian people who are entitled to decide who should govern their country and how.’’

Putin was also asked what he admires most about the United States, and he said ``creativity.’’

PUTIN: I like the creativity.

ROSE: Creativity?

PUTIN: Creativity when it comes to your tackling problems. Their openness — openness and open-mindedness — because it allows them to unleash the inner potential of their people. And thanks to that, America has attained such amazing results in developing their country.
