On Monday, an operation was conducted in the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) according to British imperial gamesmanship, to try to instigate UNSC action against so-called human rights violations by Syria, including that the security services of Pres. Bashar al-Assad should be charged by the International Criminal Court for "gross violations" of civil rights. This classic attempt to pave the way for regime-change by force — the short fuse to world nuclear war — was countered by Russia and China, and condemned by Syria. Back on Dec. 4, Russia and China also vetoed an attempted UNSC resolution against Assad.

The principals involved in yesterday’s operation included UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay; and the U.K. Ambassador to the UN, Mark Lyall Grant, who called for "a range of options" against Syria. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, a raving flunkey for the British Foreign Office, said in a message on Twitter, "The world is starting to match its disapproval of Syria’s crackdown with concrete steps to bring it to an end. Past time for UN Security Council to do the same."

Pillay gave a briefing to the Security Council, charging the Assad government with terrorism and violence against its dissenting citizens. The Chinese news agency Xinhua, today, provided corrective coverage, reporting that in Syria, what is really underway are instigated acts of terrorism against the government and population. Russia and China are insisting that Syria and regional governments should act through dialogue to resolve the situation on their own, without outside arms and interference. Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vitali Churkin told reporters yesterday in New York, "This push for civil war must be reverted. We saw some key members of the Security Council switch gears and turn into regime-change mode. We think this is very dangerous."

Today’s Xinhua coverage on the Dec. 12 U.N. Security Council proceedings states, "Russia, a crucial ally to Syria, said Monday that ’the only way to resolve the situation in Syria is through a Syrian-led political process,’ which means a joint effort by all parties in the Middle East country to put an end to the current political crisis through dialogue."

Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was "immoral" for the West to accuse Moscow of blocking the UNSC resolution while refusing to pressure "armed extremists" to desist.
