Opposition MPs raise the question of 14.2% Youth unemployment in the House of Commons

(CRC)—Yesterday in the ongoing debate in the House of Commons on the government’s Bill C-60, both opposition parties raised their concern that the omnibus Bill “offers no job creation measures” and “that a young person who is currently unemployed or under-employed will be financially scarred for 18 years [1] This young person, who wants to work and often has an extensive education, not only has a problem finding work, but will be affected in the future with reduced earning potential. Right now, this young person has no job and cannot invest in the economy. As I said, it will take this young person 18 years to overcome the economic deficit that is being created today. This is not the way to make the economy work,” claimed Ms. Isabelle Morin, the NDP Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Lachine.

The Liberal MP for Etobicoke North, Ms. Kirsty Duncan rose in the House of Commons to say that “…my community needs jobs, and each day at least one young person calls our office looking for work and we help find jobs, week after week. The youth unemployment rate remains a staggering 14.2%, nearly twice the rate for other Canadians. Today, 404,000 young people lack a job and another 171,000 have simply given up and dropped out of the labour market.”

As LPAC’s recent shocking exposé on youth unemployment in Europe and the United States (“The Brutish Empire’s New Concentration Camps: Youth Unemployment Soars in Europe…and the United Sates”) revealed that official reported numbers unquestionably understate the actual level of unemployment, the real level of youth unemployment in Canada could easily be as high as 20% or more.
