EIRNS—He Lifeng, the new director of the Chinese planning arm, the National Development and Resources Commission (NRDC), said that there had been good results from the first three years of the Belt and Road Initiative. Replying to a question from China Daily at the NDRC press conference, he said that more than $50 billion had been spent on the construction.

"The initiative has been echoed by more than 100 countries," He said, "and we have successively signed cooperation agreements with nearly 50 countries and cooperation agreements with over 70 departments, including international organizations. The basic principles of the initiative are accepted by more and more people along the Belt and Road.

He pointed to the Indonesian high-speed rail project, the Hungarian railroad project, and the refurbishing of the China-Laos railroad as examples of the project’s success. He Lifeng also noted that over half of the foreign students studying in China were from Belt and Road countries. [WCJ]
